1984 tells us about a world ruled by a totalitarian government: in the novel, society is dominated by “Big Brother,” a mysterious character whom no one has ever met in person and who constantly spies on citizens’ lives through the use of special telescreens. It is both a denunciation of totalitarianism and a strenuous defense of individual integrity. The entire novel focuses on the contradictions of power, the conflict between the individual and society, and the deceptions of utopia.
